90 DAYS, 90 REASONS

This post is adapted from an email I sent to a lucky few yesterday and thought was worth posting for more people to see:

“The elections are coming soon and I know not everyone’s been overwhelmed by Obama, but I found a cool campaign called 90 Days, 90 Reasons that reviews what he’s done over the past 4 years. And a little intro piece about it. Many of us are women (or have daughters and women they love!) and I think it’s important to note what Obama’s done for women, including health care, birth control, trying to stop violence against women, and pushing for equal pay to name a few.

On that note, we all probably heard about Romney’s VP pick this weekend. There’s a lot of talk about his new economic plan that would benefit not one person on this email (unless someone’s rolling in dough and I’m unaware – if so, please invest in my business!), but another note is extreme anti-choice views and I think it’s important to note and spread among other women and men that you know. You can find his little piece here. It’s longish and dense, but I want to highlight a few things in it:

  • First and foremost, there’s a lot of talk about protecting life and rights of humans and the words “woman/women” or “mother” are not mentioned ONCE. I find it odd that this the main subject of this piece is both freedom and choice, but if you’re a woman those no longer apply to you.
  • This man voted to enter both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not what I would consider a consistent approach on avidly protecting life. He would also like to cut a variety of government programs, many that benefit our soldiers and returning veterans from said war. Currently more soldiers and veterans die by their own hand in this country than are dying overseas. That’s disturbing and sad.
  • He claims that conservatives can help bridge the gap between the “pro-life” and “pro-choice” while using this inflammatory language. I am proudly both pro-life and pro-choice, and this a view that Ryan and his conservative crew blatantly ignore. The campaign to support options for women’s health is not about promoting abortion – what both sides have in common is our desire to minimize abortion as much as possible; our major distinction really is not abortion but about how we view women as human beings with full rights that are not slaves to their uteri.
  • “Under capitalism, people exercise their right to choose products and services they prefer, to pursue the job or career they desire, the business they wish to establish or deal with, the kinds of investments and savings they favor, and many more options. These choices reflect individuals’ hope to improve their lives and to develop their full human potential.” Sounds like something I’d say, right? Yea, he wrote this… He apparently doesn’t know that limiting family size offers a range of benefits to many issues in this world, including women and children’s easier ability to pursue a job or career they desire..

I could keep writing, but I’ll spare you because I think these are the important notes, you get the drift and if you want to read more you can read this piece. Keep reading and spread the word about this party and what they really think you, your friends and family are worth (economically and socially)! So if you aren’t registered to vote, there’s a link in on the 90 Days, 90 Reasons website – register and vote!!!”
